Burglars are increasingly preying on Luxembourg households it seems after a crimewave swept through the country.
During 2011, police noted a 45% rise in burglaries, a growth it attributes to offenders from abroad.
The growing problem was raised in a parliamentary question by deputy Claudia Dall'Agnol.
At a recent meeting between justice minister Jean-Marie Halsdorf and police officials, Luxembourg's police force reported that it had made 80 arrests in connection to the burglaries.
Officials explained that Luxembourg was not the only victim of the spate and that the Greater Region had also seen a rise in burglaries. They urged residents to remain cautious however, as the crimewave appears to be ongoing, despite the sustained efforts of security forces.
Altogether, police received around 2,000 reports of burglaries throughout the Grand Duchy last year. Disturbingly, among those suspected were youngsters aged from 12 years old upwards who live abroad.
