Work has begun on one of the most ambitious development projects in the country- the Ban de Gasperich.
The scheme, which spans 70 hectares of land south east of the Cloche d'Or business district, saw the first steps taken recently when diggers began excavating the foundations for the European Academy of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
This centre will be the first of many buildings to be constructed on the greenfield site, and is to be followed by an Auchan supermarket, a hotel, emergency services response centre and the new Vauban high school. In addition, the area will host a number of flats, a new boulevard and the largest park in the capital.
The development was given the green light in July 2011 and is expected to cost some 59.4 million euros.
The map on the left gives a clearer idea of the scheme, featuring 1, the PWC European Academy, 2, a housing project, 3, Auchan supermarket, 4, offices, fitness centre, conference centre and hotel, 5, the new Lycée Vauban, 6, emergency services response centre, 7, and 8, a park and wildlife reserve and 9, Howald railway station.
