Some 78,000 car owners in Luxembourg could ditch the car for other means of transport to get to work, a study has suggested.
Among the Luxembourg residents who drive to work, 36% had other means of getting to work, either via foot, public transport or bike.
The study by statistic analysts CEPS/INSTEAD said that for those living two kilometres or less from their place of work (17% of the population of drivers), alternative means of transport were a real option. It also found that 84% of drivers living more than 2 kilometres from their place of work had some form of public transport network nearby.
Furthermore, of those residents questioned, the majority of drivers considered the drive to work as a loss of time, unlike using public transport, walking or cycling, travel methods which were regarded as a way of maximising time use because they allowed commuters to do other activities such as reading or resting.
Despite the advantages of alternative travel methods, the study found that they did not carry enough weight to convince all motorists to stop using their cars.
The report concluded that further studies were necessary to explore the effectiveness of Luxembourg's public transport network and how well it meets the needs of commuters.
