(ADW) The police themselves were the victim of arson on Sunday evening in Mersch.
It was at about 8:15pm when a man poured flammable liquid over a patrol car parked in the police station car park, and set it alight, before fleeing.
Unlucky for him, the whole incident was witnessed by a passer-by, who immediately reported it to officers.
They quickly extinguished the fire before setting off in pursuit of the arsonist, following the description supplied by the witness. The police finally discovered the suspect near the post office and the bottle of flammable liquid disposed in a rubbish bin nearby.
In an attempt to arrest the man, a struggle took place and the suspect hit one of the officers in the face with his elbow. Finally the man was restrained and brought to the police station.
After a preliminary interrogation the man was taken to a detention centre and the head of the Criminal Investigation Department has now ordered further investigations.
