(ADW) A terrible accident involving a truck and a car carrying four young Luxembourg residents occurred on Friday night at Vaux-sur-Sure, between Bastogne and Neufchâteau in Belgium. The latest reports state two deaths and two injuries, one extremely serious.
Up until Sunday night the information filtering through was extremely sketchy. Some reports mentioned three deaths.
Luxembourg police, having received information from their Belgian counterparts, finally determined on Sunday night, that two deaths had occurred, plus one serious and one minor injury.
Given the lack of reliable information following the fatal accident in Belgium, Luxembourg police said in a statement: "We were dependent at all times on the information we were provided with by the Belgian authorities."
The accident itself occurred on Friday at 9:35pm on the E25 motorway between Liège and Bastogne.
A VW Golf with four young Luxembourg residents on board, crashed at full speed into the trailer of a Swiss registered truck travelling in front of them. The car became wedged completely under the truck.
The car was then dragged under the trailer of the truck for a distance of about 200 metres.
It took almost five hours to lift and separate the trailer from the car and release the occupants. Emergency services discovered a dead man - the driver, aged 19 from Pétange, a minor injury and two serious life-threatening injuries who were rushed to Liège hospital.
On Sunday, it was announced that a second victim died while in an intensive care unit.
Doctors have refused to supply more information on the prognosis of the second young man still in hospital, due to “confidentiality”.
The two damaged vehicles have been taken away as evidence, one to Bastogne and the other Messancy - waiting to be examined by experts.
The wife of one of the breakdown mechanics, who removed the car from the accident scene, stated to wort.lu that her husband had “never been confronted with a car that had been reduced to such a state of scrap metal before”.
