Managers of a beleaguered chain of drug stores say that not only are jobs in Luxembourg safe but they are to begin a recruitment drive.
Schlecker in Germany announced last week it had begun insolvency proceedings but assured employees at its 28 Luxembourg stores their jobs were safe.
At an emergency meeting between directors and unions on Friday, Schlecker Luxembourg said it planned to hire additional staff.
LCGB spokesman Aloyse Kapweiler said: “They explained that the Luxembourg Schlecker subsidiary is independent of its German counterpart, and that there was no concern about the activity in Luxembourg. They even talked of new hires in the coming months."
Currently, Schlecker employs 120 staff in its Luxembourg shops. The LCGB said it was relieved that no jobs were threatened but questioned why Schlecker had not made the announcement sooner.
Following the meeting unions and managers agreed to meet regularly to improve communication. The next meeting is planned for mid-March.
