The Siberian cold has been keeping Luxembourg in check for days. While we can wrap up warm and hide under hats, scarves and gloves, seeking refuge in cosiness and warmth indoors, not all animals enjoy the same comforts.
Keeping farm animals out in the fields is not forbidden, as they have a shelter. But what about our beloved pets?
Even though our animal protection laws do not forbid keeping animals outside, it's hardly recommended, and here are a few tips for dog keepers.
Only let your dogs outside to do their business. If you let them out in the garden, make sure your dog keeps moving and isn't outside for more than half an hour in minus temperatures.
It's best to take your dog for a walk so that it keeps moving and doesn't cool down. If your dog doesn't have an undercoat, it can be useful to buy a dog coat or sweater to keep your dog warm.
If there is salt on the pavements, clean your dogs' paws to avoid cracked pads.
Some dog owners might assume that their breed of dog might be well suited for cold temperatures, but it has to be remembered that dogs such as Huskies and Golden Retrievers are in constant movement when they are used as sledge or hunting dogs. Your pet should not be left outside on tiled balconies or damp lawns.
Please take good care of your pets during the ongoing cold, and keep them as warm and cosy as you'd like to be yourself.
