(ADW) A high-speed head-on crash occurred on the route between Friedhof and Erpeldange, near Diekirch, trapping a female driver and causing her serious injury. It was later discovered that alcohol played a part in the accident.
It was at about 10:45pm on Wednesday night when a man driving a car on the road between Friedhof and Erpeldange, swerved into the opposite lane and crashed head-on into an on-coming vehicle.
As a result of the impact the woman became trapped in her car and had to be freed by firefighters. Suffering serious injuries, she was rushed to hospital. The driver of the other car was only slightly injured.
In an attempt to avoid the accident a third motorist hit another car, however no injuries were reported.
As a result of the accidents police blocked off the road in both directions and a detour via Diekirch was set up in order to begin a clean-up operation which lasted almost three hours, before the road was opened to traffic once again.
By order of the prosecutor, an investigation was launched to determine the circumstances of the accident and criminal police were present at the scene. The driver causing the accident was later discovered to have been under the influence of alcohol and his driving licence was confiscated.
