A celebration of Indian culture and cuisine is expected to have raised more than 20,000 euros for life-saving health organisations in India.
While the proceeds of this year's Indian Bazaar in Sandweiler on Sunday have not yet been totted up, with huge crowds flocking to the event organisers are expecting proceeds to top 20,000 euros.
Treasurer Berthy Braun told wort.lu/en: “We normally raise around 24,000 euros so this year we're expecting it to be around that.
“For our organisation, it's the most important event for raising awareness and fundraising of the year.”
With 480 delicious authentic Indian meals served, countless purchases of hand-made crafts and second-hand books, the 34th Indian Bazaar was a big draw for people with an interest in India and supporters of Luxembourg-based charity Aide à l'Enfance de l'Inde.
This year, the event also featured a show by Europe's strongest man Georges Christen Power as well as workshops for children and an Indian dance presentation by the Indian Association of Luxembourg.
The bazaar was set up more than 30 years ago by a group of parents adopting children from orphanages in India. Since then it has supported a range of projects through its fundraising activities.
All funds at this year's bazaar will go to six health-focused grassroots organisations in India, aimed at tackling common illnesses which, if untreated, can result in death.
