A Luxembourg commune mayor is being investigated for abuse of power and insulting a police officer.
The Kopstal figure head's behaviour came under question when, during a party at a restaurant in Kopstal, it is alleged he falsified a late-licence for the owner of the establishment.
Later the same night he reportedly abused police officers conducting a speed control in Bridel.
The bizarre allegations were made when police entered a restaurant in Kopstal late on February 11.
When they asked to see the owner's licence permitting such late-night activities, the owner and mayor allegedly went into the kitchen. They then reappeared with a handwritten document, apparently containing spelling mistakes, written on notepaper headed with the restaurant's logo.
The police, believing that the document had been written since they arrived at the restaurant, immediately ordered that the restaurant close. To which, the mayor reportedly protested and made threats to speak to the attorney general.
But, the evening did not end there. Two police officers conducting speed controls in Bridel reported seeing a couple walking along the side of the road under the influence of alcohol. The man was identified as the same mayor from the earlier incident. “Who has told you that you should check here," he reportedly shouted at the policemen. "Get away!"
After further insults and loud screams by the mayor, the officers charged the man for insulting the police.
Judiciary spokesman Henri Eippers confirmed to wort.lu that the prosecution had opened a case regarding the incident.
