France has tackled sexism by banning the use of Mademoiselle on its state forms but will Francophone Luxembourg follow suit?
That was the question put to the country's equal opportunities and public service ministers by Green Deputy Vivian Loschetter. She said: “In France, a recent circular of the Prime Minister asked for the gradual disappearance of Mademoiselle, wife's name and maiden name on administrative forms. They will be replaced by Madame, the equivalent of Monsieur for men, saying on the one hand that the word Mademoiselle is outdated and, secondly, that women are no more bound than men to report their marital status."
Ms Loschetter asked whether it would be appropriate to introduce a similar measure in Luxembourg on a legislative level.
She also asks if the ministers share her view that by forcing women to divulge their marital status on state forms, it is an invasion of an individual's privacy and a form of gender discrimination.
Do you think Luxembourg should remove the word Mademoiselle from official forms. Post your comment below.
