It's never been a love affair. Asking the British to give up the Pound for a common European currency carries at least the same burden of emotions as expecting the Germans to forget about the good old days of the Deutschmark.
Whereas it made little if no sense to launch the Euro without Germany, the UK felt confident staying out of an endeavour perceived as coming dangerously short of "optimum currency areas“.
