Morteza Farshbaf's film Mourning lies somewhere on the edge between being a sound film and a silent film. As two of the main protagonists are deaf-mute, the film explores mal- and miscommunication from a fresh point of view.
The opening throws the audience into darkness. We hear a couple fighting; they storm out of the house. Just as the audience is quite literally left in the dark about what is happening, so are the main protagonists of the film who will try to put the pieces together. What were the two fighting about, why did they leave their son behind, why did they have to die in a car accident?
