(str/NG) The gunshot wound to the head sustained by a 48-year-old Belgian woman on Saturday in Fentange could have been fatal. How she was shot, however, remains unclear.
Around 5:30pm, the woman was seated with friends on the ground floor terrace of an apartment when suddenly a hiss was heard before the woman slumped in her chair, a bullet wound in her lower jaw.
A ricochet is now considered possible, as the bullet had been flying in the opposite direction. This, however, would mean that the shot would have had to be done with a very high arch, considering there is a hill between the apartment building where the woman was shot and the field, with several homes on the summit.
But the hunters were not the only ones shooting in the area on Saturday. About 1.5km from the scene there is a shooting range where shooters can pursue their interest as late as sundown.
One piece of evidence pointing in the direction of this could be the bullet angle. According to current information about the victim's injuries, this was apparently very shallow.
The shooting range is 292m above sea level, while the Fentange terrace lies at 275m. In between, there is a knoll at 302m.
The shot wasn't heard in Fentange. The distance is also well within range and the angle could fit the injuries. A missed shot should therefore be taken into consideration.
