An irate
motorist called the police on Tuesday afternoon following a heated
dispute with another driver near the capital following “dangerous”
driving. Police, however, discovered far more serious crimes had been
committed.
The
incident occurred on Route de Thionville when the driver of a French
registered car was reported by another motorist to have been “driving dangerously”. A dispute regarding the right of way then
ensued.
The driver of the French car, a Peugeot, then allegedly screamed at the other car before speeding off.
Following
the call by the angry motorist, police began searching for the
vehicle and eventually discovered the Peugeot, unoccupied, at Aire de
Berchem service station.
Before the
driver returned, the vehicle officers received information from French
police that the number plates had actually come from a car stolen a
few months earlier in France.
When
the driver returned to the Peugeot, police began an inspection and
discovered that the driver didn't have insurance and presented a driving
licence that had not been valid since 2014, as all points had been
removed due to previous offences. In addition, the culprit was known
to French authorities for various offences.
When
questioned about the car, the man claimed it had been bought in the
Netherlands and never registered in France.
The
Peugeot was immediately seized and the offender was detained; his
fate, and in which country, is yet to be determined.
