Luxembourg City's traditional "Braderie", loosely translated as "rummage sale", takes place on Monday, but in the build-up to it at the weekend we'll already be able to find a bargain or two, with Sunday shopping as well.
In many shops the bargains
begin on September 1 in the capital and indeed around the country,
and on Sunday, September 4, most stores in the city will be open in
the afternoon. Buses will be free too.
Then comes the big day on
Monday, when about 400 traders, 13 associations and eight political
parties will have stands along the streets near the Gare
district.
Traffic
On Monday the area around
the Gare will be blocked to traffic. In order to get there taking a
bus is the best option, or hopping on a City "Vel'oh" bike. Those
coming by car are advised to use the Park & Ride Bouillon car
park not far from the end of Rue de Hollerich, with a regular
passing bus service.
However, exceptionally the
Place de l'Europe car park in Kirchberg and the Fort Wedell car park
near the train station will offer free parking on Monday
Because of the Braderie
disruption, some of the bus timetables have been altered slightly.

Prizes
Although the Braderie is
mostly about finding a good bargain, there will be several stands
holding competitions to win many prizes, including an electric bike!
The City Braderie starts
at 8am on Monday and runs until 7pm. However, the festivities will
continue on Rue Glesener from 7pm for an after-Braderie
celebration.
Why is the Braderie the same time as Schueberfouer?
In the
early 20th century, shopkeepers in the capital complained that goods
were also being sold at the Schueberfouer, arguing they were losing
out on customers. As a solution, Luxembourg City hosted its first Braderie sale in 1929. Since then the Braderie is always scheduled
to take place on a Monday during the Schueberfouer.
