(JB) The
artist who created an iconic peace sculpture, a version of which can
be found in Luxembourg, has died.
Swedish
artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd died on Tuesday aged 81 at his home
in Landskrona (southern Sweden).
He
conceived “Non Violence”, the knotted Colt Magnum 357 revolver
sculpture, as a symbol of peace after the murder in New York of his
friend and former Beatle John Lennon, who was gunned down on December
8, 1980 by Mark Chapman.
Luxembourg, which had acquired one of the early versions of the work, donated the sculpture to the United Nations in 1988.
Other
versions are also on display in Stockholm, Los Angeles and Lausanne,
where the artist lived for many years.
Former
student of Fernand Léger, Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd exhibited his
work around the world and also published several volumes of poetry.
