(MF/JB) The winning designs for the future hospital of the south of Luxembourg were revealed on Friday, showing a vast complex to be built beside the Raemerich roundabout in Esch-sur-Alzette.
The hospital, which is designed by Austrian architects Albert Wimmer ZT-GmH, will see three existing hospitals, in Esch-sur-Alzette, Dudelange and Niederkorn, consolidated on a single site.
Construction is expected to begin in 2018, after the bill is adopted, with the first patients moving onto the site from 2022.
The winning architectural design is made up of three triangular buildings, the first of which will be seven storeys high and will form the core of the future hospital.
The central building will house the “Centre Bacelesse”, while the third will house the geriatric and psychiatric services.
Further details have yet to be finalised with the architects. If negotiations fail, the second-place design, by GMP International GmbH, could be adopted.
The winning design was selected from 56 projects submitted after a Europe-wide competition for designs was launched in 2014.
It is expected that the consolidation of three hospitals on one site would save a considerable amount of money.
It is not yet known what will happen to the existing hospitals once the new site opens.
