Luxembourg police received several phone calls on Saturday morning informing them that one of their computers was malfunctioning, a well-known scam in the public domain, but rare that the police fall victim.
The mysterious callers presented themselves as official Microsoft "repairers" and of course offered their services to repair the supposedly malfunctioning computer.
When the callers were informed that they were actually in communication with the country’s police force and that their number had been registered, they quickly hung up.
Luxembourg police are therefore taking the opportunity to remind residents to be vigilant in such cases that could result in the online “attacker” grabbing access to computers, access codes and therefore personal and confidential data.
Personal data and passwords should never be given by phone and Microsoft themselves or their affiliates will never telephone ‘out of the blue’, only if you make initial contact.
