(JB) Xavier Bettel has stepped down from his role as head of the Luxembourg Democratic Party to focus on his work as Prime Minister.
A new party leader is expected to be elected at the next DP congress on November 28, this year.
Bettel has held the role since 2013 and will leave with a “good record”, a press release from the party said.
What's the DP?
The DP or Demokratesch Partei is a major liberal political party in Luxembourg, sitting on the centre-right. Founded in 1955, it is today the second-largest party in the Chamber of Deputies (parliament) with 13 out of 60 seats.
Bettel has provided the second DP Prime Minister for Luxembourg not to be affiliated with the CSV since 1945 after Gaston Thorn (1974-79), whose party formed a coalition with the LSAP.
Today, the DP is one of three ruling parties which make up the government coalition, along with the LSAP and Déi Greng (Greens).
