Monday marks the start of grape harvesting on vineyard slopes of the Moselle.
It all begins with the Rivaner vines with the so-called “noble” wines, such as Pinot, Auxerrois and Riesling, following on in the coming weeks.
If all goes to plan, Rivaner grape harvesting will be finished by the end of the week, which is when the other varieties will take over.
A good harvester will pick about 800kg of grapes per day, and work starts early too.
At 7.30am on Monday, pickers were already out in force in the morning mist, to continue the arduous task throughout the day.
The whole of the Moselle region will bustle for the next three weeks to the rhythm of grape harvesting for all wine types, not forgetting “vin de paille” or straw wine which is the latest harvest and of course, with a bit of luck (as we didn't see any last year) the first tipple off the vines, Ice wine.
