Luxembourg's Cargolux, Europe's biggest all-cargo airline, made code-share and space-swap agreements with Japan's Nippon Cargo Airlines (NCA), that will give both companies access to each other's capacity.
They are planned to take effect in the summer season of 2018.
"Both airlines consider the agreement as a first step towards a potentially deeper cooperation," Cargolux said in a statement.
Cargolux will be able to use space on NCA flights from Frankfurt Hahn to Tokyo's Narita International. NCA will be able to access Cargolux flights from Luxemburg to Narita, which it plans to operate weekly, the company said.
Cargolux Italia will halt its flights to Tokyo and continue its service to Osaka's Kansai International Airport, it said.
