Brussels has urged the EU's 27 member states to pay more money into the bloc's joint budget, which is facing a black hole of up to €13 billion after Brexit.
Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, is pushing European governments to lift the imposed cap of 1% of the EU's gross national income on the bloc's common budget, calling the cash the equivalent of just "one cup of coffee a day" for the European taxpayer. "I think Europe is worth more than one cup of coffee a day," said Juncker at a conference in Brussels on Monday.
