Macron to advance closer defence ties with UK
Despite Britain's decision to leave EU, French president still keen for UK to join European Intervention Initiative
French president Emmanuel Macron is to use this week's Anglo-French summit to push the UK to join a new European defence initiative, aimed at ever-closer integration of Europe's armed forces.
The European Intervention Initiative (EII) was one of the more eye-catching proposals outlined in a groundbreaking speech by Macron at the Sorbonne university in Paris last September that called for an overhaul of the EU in the wake of Brexit.
